Best of 2017 - Part 2 - Personal

Best of 2017 - Part 2 - Personal

It's that time of year again when we all look back on the year and pick out the good bad and the ugly bits. As a photographer it's a great exercise to review your images and choose your top 10 photos from the year.

When I do this I break it down into different genre's of photography, this year I've broken it down into 3 categories: Street photography, Personal, and Family. After I've done that I'll then choose my overall top 10 of the year.

Today is part 2 in my series of best of 2017, this time looking at some of my personal work which I often use for camera club competition. If you missed part 1 on Street Photography click here

I'm delighted to share that I was awarded a Selector's Choice Award for this image at this year's NEMPF exhibition.

NEMPF is essentially the regional group of photography clubs for Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Lincolnshire. Each year they hold an exhibition and on a small number of entries get through to be displayed.

2016 Top 10 Images

2016 has come to an end and it's been a great year for my photography.

As we start 2017 i wanted to take the time to review all my best images and choose my very best 10 images.

This is a great exercise for photographers to do each year, if you're a photographer reading this or someone who loves to take photos on their phone, i'd definitely encourage you to give this a go.

Here's how I worked worked down my thousands of images to just 10.

At first it can be a little overwhelming, so faced with such a large number of images I needed to break them down. As i'd been rating my images throughout the year the first thing to do was to take all my highly rated images and put them in a Top 10 potential collection in Lightroom.

I was still left with a high number of images, well over 100, so I then separated these into different categories; Family, Personal (includes landscapes, street, nature) and Daryl Porter Photography work. So once I'd separated the images into these categories, it became easier to choose my top 10 in each section.

Then the challenge really started, getting 3 lots of top 10's down to the final overall best images, it became really difficult.

In the end I decided to select what I consider the best of the best from each section. This led to a good mix of images in the final top 10.

I'm delighted with the overall top 10, I have 3 wedding related images, 3 dog portraits, 2 landscapes, 1 baby portrait and 1 street photo.

I’m looking forward to see what 2017 brings, I want to photograph more weddings, more portraits and more dogs, have a look through the recently updated website and get in touch using the booking form.

I hope you all have an amazing 2017.
